The Virginia & Truckee Railroad gets into the Halloween spirit by offering a number of fun and spooky special train rides during the Halloween season. Other railroads in the area have Halloween trains as well.

Saturday and Sunday trains, October 10 - 11, 2026, depart at 11:20 a.m., 1:20 p.m., and 3 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday trains, October 16 - 18 and 23 - 25 include an additional departure at 5 p.m. Ride the Pumpkin Patch Trains on the V & T Railroad from Virginia City to Gold Hill and back. The pumpkin patch is fall's ultimate playground, so it's the perfect time to catch a train to the Gold Hill pumpkin patch and pick your special pumpkin. Tickets are $27 for adults, $19 for kids, $8 for toddlers with pumpkin, $21 adult no pumpkin, free for toddlers on parents laps who do not pick a pumpkin. For more information, call (775) 847-0380. October 29 - 31, 2026. Train times are 5:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m., 8 p.m., 9 p.m. Join us in Virginia City for a chilling ride through the haunted Comstock Lode. This Halloween, if you dare, we'll venture to the Gold Hill Graveyard to meet the Executioner. You'll travel safely in open-air cars beneath the eerie glow of a crescent moon, where the wild west meets the best time of year. This is an evening you won't want to miss - filled with fright and a touch of magic. Enjoy this eerie, electric, chilly Halloween steam evening. Tickets are $26 adults, $19 kids. Don't miss out - get tickets online. Dress warmly.

Saturday and Sunday, October 17 - 18, 2026, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Ride the steam train (V&T No. 25 and Glenbrook) at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. The event will include a pumpkin patch with pumpkins for sale, food trucks, games in the park, and more. Handcar rides from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wristbands include unlimited steam train rides and museum entry. Costumes are encouraged. Adults 18 and over are $25, kids 4 to 17 are $15, age 3 and under free. Regular museum admission will also be available. Train rides depart about every 40 minutes from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Friday and Saturday, October 30 - 31, 2026. We will have steam train rides with historic V&T locomotive No. 25. Trains rides begin at 10 a.m. and the last train is at 3 p.m. Train rides last approximately 30-35 minutes. Tickets are available in person at the museum. Fares are: $12 ages 12 and over; $6 for ages 4 - 11 and museum members, free ages 3 and under. Tickets available online.

More Halloween Trains in Nevada and California

Saturday and Sunday, October 17 - 18 and 24 - 25, 2026. The trains will take visitors to a Pumpkin Patch where they can select their pumpkins for purchase. The museum opens at 10 a.m. and trains depart hourly from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. On Saturday nights, Super Spooky Night Trains depart hourly between 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The museum will also be open on Pumpkin Patch Express days. Admission for FRRS members is free. Non-members are $20 per carload or $15 with 4 cans of food for the EPCAN food bank. The museum is north of Reno in Portola, CA. For more information, call (530) 832-4131.

October 16 - 17 and 23 - 24, 2026. All start at 7 p.m. - The Nevada Northern Railway's Haunted Ghost Train takes passengers on scary trips with ghost stories, zombies, ghosts, ghouls, aliens, and maybe even Big Foot. While riding this Halloween train, you'll never know what's around the next bend. Costumes encouraged. Tickets are $45 for adults, $20 for children 4 through 12, $38 for seniors 65+. Kids under 4 ride free but they still need a ticket. You can get tickets online or call (775) 289-2085.
